Giving Thanks this Harvest

“Thank you for the world so sweet, thanks for the food we eat, thank you for the birds that sing. Thank you God for everything”

“For what we are about to receive, may we be truly thankful”

“Rub a dub dub, thanks for the grub”

Do you say grace before meals, or give thanks in some way? IN this Harvest time what does it mean to give thanks?

What does Harvest mean to you?

Is it a time of thankfulness for that God gives us in nature?

Is it a  time to think of those for whom the harvest has failed? And who don’t have the backup of one of the world’s largest economies to simply buy in more food?

Is it bigger than simply thanking God for our food?

In this day and age, in which we seem to have moved away from our more agricultural roots and economy base, we can take our food for granted. If something is short, we simply wait for the supermarket to find the produce elsewhere – hopefully not at the disadvantage of those they buy from, (though all too often it can be).

However when the economic noose has tightened around necks and debts have spiralled all too often some folk  find themselves making choices between putting food in their bellies or paying the bills. There has been much said of economic recovery in the news but the rise of food banks, including Storehouse here in Sudbury is evidence that all is not as cut and dried as we might like it to be.

This harvest time, spare a thought for those who have little to give thanks for and try not to take what you have for granted. Simple things like even saying a brief thank you prayer before eating a meal helps us to keep in touch with all that is provided for us.

Maybe support a charity helping communities and farmers in far flung places of our world or give support closer to home through Storehouse.  There are collection points in various place in town, we have one at St Andrew’s and you can find out more about the important work Storehouse and where those collection points are here: www.stourvalleyvineyard.org/storehouse

We’re celebrating harvest and all that God give us with a series of events over the weekend of 26th-28th September. We have our Harvest supper and a concert with Gainsborough singers on the evening of the Friday (Contact 01787 379401 for tickets). On the Saturday we have our Harvest flower festival and Church fete and on Sunday Morning we have traditional Harvest Festival service at 10am – singing all your favourite harvest hymns.  We also have our First Friday film the following Friday and Messy  Church on Sunday 5th at 3pm!

Do come and join us as we give thank for all that God provides, not just our food, but our talents and skills too; and we as we seek to support and uphold the work of Storehouse amongst those in our community who have so little themselves.

Many Blessings,

Chris Ramsey
